What is Metal Door
Metal doors share several characteristics and properties that make them a viable option for various settings. They exhibit strength and durability, providing reliable security for both commercial and residential buildings. Metal doors are also known for their resistance to corrosion, ensuring longevity even in harsh environments. This quality makes them particularly suitable for coastal areas or locations with high levels of moisture.
Provide security and safety
Security is one of the main benefits of metal doors. They're strong enough to withstand break-ins and burglaries, which makes them an excellent investment for families with children or pets who want to protect their homes from intruders.
Enhance the curb appeal
Metal doors come in many colors, shapes, and sizes, so you can choose one that fits your taste perfectly. They're available in a wide range of styles, from contemporary designs to classic French and Victorian styles that will look great on any home’s front entrance or backyard patio entranceway.
Increase energy efficiency
Metal doors help keep heat inside during cold weather conditions while preventing heat loss during warm weather conditions thanks to their thermal insulation properties, which reduce heat loss through windows, skylights, and other openings in walls or roofs.
Good insulation properties
Metal doors are also known for their excellent insulation properties. This makes them perfect for areas with a lot of wind and rain because they will help reduce the amount of noise and moisture in your home. They can also be fitted with insulation materials so that you can ensure that all sound and heat are kept out, no matter what time of year it is.
Easy to keep clean
Metal doors can easily keep clean if you choose the proper surface treatment. For example, many homeowners like the look of anodized aluminum because it's resistant to stains and scratches and doesn't require any maintenance.
Provide soundproofing capabilities
Metal doors can be an excellent choice to block out the noise outside your home. The metal is naturally soundproof, but you can also add insulation for even better results. This will keep the noise out while still allowing you to enjoy the sounds of nature inside your home.

Steel security doors, with their robust construction and exceptional security features, are ideal for applications that require high-level security and durability. They excel in commercial, industrial, and residential settings where protection against forced entry and extreme weather conditions is crucial.
On the other hand, metal doors provide a wider range of options, including aluminium, galvanised steel, and stainless steel. These doors offer versatility in design, aesthetic appeal, and cost-effectiveness. They are often recommended for interior use, projects with moderate security requirements, and budget-conscious applications.
How Durable are Metal Doors Compared to Wooden Doors?
Metal doors are ideal for harsh weather conditions as they resist indentation as well as abrasions. On the other hand, wood can crack and warp if not internally reinforced or covered with a portico or porch. In addition, choosing a quality lock door is very important as this will increase the door's security. It's important to incorporate superior hardware technifications to maintain a proper seal and increase the longevity of your door.
Metal doors are fire rated, meaning they can withstand high temperatures and prevent the spread of fire and smoke for 30 minutes to 3 hours. Made from fire resistant materials and required to meet strict safety standards and building codes, these doors are suitable for use in a variety of environments to enhance safety and protection in emergency situations.

Why Do Metal Doors Rust?

Moisture build-up is the key cause of rusting metal. Rust is a form of corrosion within the metal that occurs when there is a large amount of oxidation in the metal. Much like plaque on your teeth, this oxidation slowly eats away at the metal the longer that it is left on it.
Rust can also be caused by various different harmful and corrosive chemicals often used in cleaning. These corrosive chemicals could include sulfuric acid, bromine, and sodium hydroxide.
A natural substance that can also greatly affect the health of metal is salt. Salt can be found in many forms such as salt water, salt air, and road salts. Although salt does not directly cause rust to form, it greatly accelerates the process in which rust forms.
Factors to Consider When Selecting a Metal Door
Security requirements
The level of security needed is a crucial consideration. If high-level security is a top priority, metal doors are often the preferred choice due to their robustness and resistance to forced entry.
Environmental factors
The environmental conditions to which the door will be exposed should be taken into account. Metal doors excel in extreme weather conditions, offering better resistance to fire, impact, and severe climates. On the other hand, certain metal doors, such as aluminium doors, are more suitable for interior or moderate environmental conditions.
Budget constraints
Budget is an important factor for many individuals. Steel doors tend to be more expensive than some metal doors due to the higher cost of steel. Therefore, budget considerations may influence the choice between steel doors and metal doors.
Material of Metal Door
Metal doors are typically made from materials such as steel, aluminum, or stainless steel. These materials offer exceptional strength, durability, and safety. Steel doors are often galvanized to prevent rust and corrosion, while aluminum doors offer a lighter weight option with resistance to weathering. Stainless steel doors are prized for their durability and resistance to stains and corrosion, making them suitable for harsh environments.
What is Filled Inside a Metal Door?
Honeycomb
Honeycomb cores get their name from the honeycomb shaped cardboard that is hardened by special resins. This material is the most commonly used at interior openings and is a heavy-duty, durable core. It can be fire rated up to 3 hours. The insulation value is lower than a foam core but it can be used at exterior openings if a cost effective solution is desired.
Polystyrene
The first level of insulated door core is the polystyrene which is a slab of foam that is placed in the core of the door. Metal doors with this core type are most often used at exterior openings and can be fire rated up to 3 hours. The insulation value is much higher than the honeycomb but lower than the polyurethane.
Polyurethane
This insulated core is a foam that is injected into the core and expands to fill all the available space within the cavity of the metal door. Polyurethane will have the best insulation value that is higher than both honeycomb and polystyrene. However, a polyurethane door cannot be fire rated.
Steel stiffened
Steel stiffened metal doors have steel channels that run the full height of the door and are spaced about 6″ O.C. across the width of the door. They are spot welded to the faces and the gaps between the channels is filled with insulation. These doors are often specified at high abuse areas or can be used at openings where sound transmission ratings are a concern.
Mineral core
Metal doors can be specified with a temperature rise rating which will require a sheet of mineral board inserted into the door. This material has properties that reduce the heat that is transferred through the door to the non-fire side of the opening. Temperature rise ratings can be 250, 450 or 650 degrees where the lower rating of 250 performs better than the higher ratings. In the event of a fire, this allows building occupants to pass by the opening unharmed by the heat from the fire.
Application of Metal Door
Commercial
Metal doors are widely used in commercial buildings such as offices, shopping centers, and hotels due to their durability, security, and fire-resistant properties.
Residential
Homeowners use metal doors for entry points, particularly for front and back doors, to enhance security and durability while also providing an option for aesthetic customization.
Hospitals
Hospitals and clinics utilize metal doors for their strength, ease of cleaning, and ability to meet hygiene and fire safety standards, ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff.
Schools
Schools and universities install metal doors in classrooms, laboratories, and main entrances to ensure safety, security, and long-term durability against high foot traffic.
4 Easy Ways to Remove Rust from Metal Doors
Sanding
Larger surface areas will require sanding. A sanding block is an easy way to get the leverage and coverage you need. Chemical removal or sanding will help remove both large and small patches to help you prep for priming and sealing.
Using a wire brush
A sturdy wire brush is perfect for grooves or other hard-to-reach areas because the bristles can get into cracks and crevices. Scrub the rust in a circular motion, and use a light pressure to prevent scratching the door.
Applying household chemicals
You can use a rust remover chemical, vinegar, or a paste made of baking soda and water for small patches of rust. Apply the paste to any rusty areas, leaving it for about 30 minutes. Use a soft cloth to remove the paste. Baking soda is especially effective for leftover spots after sanding or wire brush removal.
Using a grinder
You can use a grinder, drill, or sander if you need more muscle for stubborn areas. Use the appropriate grit for the amount of rust, and don't add too much pressure to prevent damaging the door's body underneath the rust.
Maintenance Tips for Metal Doors
Clean regularly
Dirt and dust can accumulate on the surface of your metal door over time, so it's important to give it a good cleaning every once in a while. Use warm water mixed with mild soap or detergent and a soft cloth to wipe down the entire surface of the door. It's especially important to clean around the hinges and locks, as dirt buildup could lead to damage or corrosion over time.
Check for damage
It's also important to inspect your metal door periodically for any signs of damage, such as dents or scratches. If you find any, you can use touch-up paint to fill in the damaged areas and restore the look of your door.

Re-coat as needed
Metal doors may need to be re-coated with a protective finish every couple of years to help protect them from rust and other elements. Make sure that you clean the surface thoroughly before applying the new coating, and wear gloves, goggles, and a face mask while applying it.
Lubricate moving parts
Over time, the moving parts on your metal door, such as the hinges and locks, can become worn or stiff. To keep them functioning correctly, it's important to lubricate them regularly with light machine oil. Be sure to wipe off any excess oil afterward so it doesn't attract dirt and dust.
