What is Fire Rated Steel Door
Fire rated steel doors represent specialized doors meticulously designed to withstand fire and smoke, assuming the role of a barrier to impede the rapid propagation of flames throughout a building. As integral components of passive fire protection systems, they are strategically positioned to compartmentalize areas, allowing precious time for occupants to evacuate and emergency responders to intervene.
They safeguard your assets
When you have fire-rated steel doors installed, you are assured of protection and peace of mind knowing that in case of fire, the damage will not be as extensive had you not been prepared. This allows businesses to reduce the potential damage to their property in the event of a fire and pick themselves up more quickly after.
They protect people from harm
Since fire-rated steel doors bar flames and are designed to contain fire and smoke, they give people enough time to escape the building and move to a safer place. Besides fire, this kind of door can hold in smoke and toxic fumes that can cause more dangerous combustions, especially for buildings housing hazardous materials, and significantly harm people and destroy properties.
Sound-proof
Fire-rated steel doors are naturally heavy and thick. Since they have insulating features, they provide an additional benefit of soundproofing. If there are areas in your building where the equipment inside generates noise, fire-rated steel doors can dampen and prevent the sound from transferring from one room to another.
They provide physical security
The materials of fire-rated steel doors are highly robust and extremely hard to break into. So, these specialized doors not only protect properties from flames but also other potential threats, such as burglars.

What is the Fire Rating of Fire Rated Steel Door?
Fire-rated steel doors work in conjunction with surrounding passive fire protection systems to provide around-the-clock defense against fire and enable safe and unobstructed passage out of a building. When installed properly, they will not combust or fail for the duration of their fire rating (in the average fire). Standard fire ratings vary, typically ranging from 20 to 180 minutes depending on code criteria. Fire-rated steel doors are required to be self-closing and positive latching. They must remain closed during a fire to protect the means of egress.
Fire rated steel doors are subjected to endurance testing where the specimen is exposed to extreme heat of up to 1925 degrees F for the maximum 180 minute rating. If the door remains in the frame with no through openings and limits flames, it is certified with an endurance rating of either 20/45/60/90/180 minutes.

Fire rated steel doors are fitted with intumescent strips in a groove on every edge of the door or fire door frame. When a fire breaks out, the heat causes the intumescent strips to expand to fill the gap between the fire door and the frame. This seals the room and stops the spread of fire for a given time. A fire rated steel door will only work if it is closed when the fire breaks out, so you should always ensure that your fire rated steel door is fitted with an automatic door closer and a sign that identifies the door as a fire rated steel door.
Choosing the right location
When installing a fire-rated steel door, it should be installed in different locations according to the requirements of various national fire regulations. Ensure that the location of the fire-rated steel door maximally prevents the spread of fire.
Measurement and installation of the frame
Begin with precise measurements to ensure accurate frame dimensions. Subsequently, install the frame securely and vertically, meeting the design requirements of the fire door.
Installing the door leaf
Properly install the door leaf onto the frame, ensuring smooth opening and closing while aligning and balancing the door leaf for good sealing performance.
Installation of hardware components
Install the necessary hardware components for the fire-rated steel door, such as locks, handles, hinges, etc. Ensure proper installation to guarantee the normal use and safety performance of the fire-rated steel door.
Testing and adjustment
After installation, conduct tests to ensure that the fire-rated steel door closes correctly, forms a tight seal, and can be opened in the event of a fire.
How To Identify A Fire Rated Steel Door
Certification
The most authentic way to identify a fire door is to check its certification label. All fire doors are required to have a certification label as it acts as proof of whether the doors are tested enough to determine their fire resistance level. These labels are usually found on the top edge of the door leaf. The validation of a certified fire door is to be done by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF).
Gap
The gap between a fire door and its door frame will neither be less than 2mm nor will it exceed 4mm. Usually, a gap of 3mm is considered an ideal gap in the case of fire doors. To check the gap between the door and the door frame, you can insert a £1 coin, which is about 3mm thick.
Intumescent seal
A fire door is seen fitted with an approved intumescent strip seal which swells in heat to seal the gaps between the fire door and its door frame. These seals are critical to prevent the spread of smoke and fire.
Closing mechanism
A fire door always has a self-closing mechanism as it shuts automatically behind people evacuating to contain the fire and smoke. This also limits the oxygen from entering the affected premises, as oxygen feeds a fire. A fire door will always have a closing mechanism at the top of the door to close the door.
Hinges
A fire door contains at least three hinges, and if there are less than three hinges on any door, it is not an effective fire door. The fire regulations require fire doors to be fitted with three hinges (4-inch certified hinges).
Signage
Signages are the visible signs seen on a fire door that indicates the presence of a fire door. This is one of the easiest and simplest ways to identify a fire door. The visible presence of signages on fire doors at office buildings is mandatory.
Material of Fire Rated Steel Door
Fire Rated Steel Doors, one type of fire door, are typically made of galvanized steel, offering excellent stability and fire resistance. As a crucial safety feature in buildings, steel fire doors play a vital role in the event of a fire. They can prevent the spread of fire and provide a safe evacuation route for individuals. However, to ensure the effectiveness and stability of steel fire doors, proper installation and regular maintenance are indispensable.
Application of Fire Rated Steel Door
Residential area
Residential area is one of the key areas for installing fire rated steel doors. Because there are many residents in residential areas and the potential fire hazard is high, effective measures must be taken to prevent the occurrence and spread of fire. Fire rated steel doors can effectively isolate the source of fire and protect the lives and property of residents.

Factors Affecting Fire Ratings
The core material
The most important factor affecting a steel door's fire rating is the core materials used to manufacture the door. The most common materials include vermiculite boards, ceramic materials, and fire-resistant mineral cores.
The door frame and seals
Apart from the materials used to make the steel door, the door frame and seal used during the installation process of the door can affect the fire resistance as well. Proper intumescent seals will expand when exposed to heat, creating a fire-proof barrier that prevents smoke and flames from spreading around the edges of the door.
The installation hardware
Other installation hardware, such as the hinges, latches, and locks used during the installation of your fire rated steel door, can also affect the fire rating. Ensure that any hardware used during the installation of your fire rated steel door is also rated to withstand high temperatures and maintain the integrity of your door in case of a fire outbreak.
Regular inspection of door structure
Regularly inspect the door structure of fire rated steel doors, including door frames, door panels, door locks, and other components, to ensure they are intact without deformation, cracks, or other damages. Pay special attention to checking the integrity of the door edges' sealing strips and the tightness of the seals to ensure their effectiveness in fire and smoke prevention.
Cleaning surface debris
Regularly clean the surface of fire rated steel doors to remove dust, dirt, and other debris. Mild cleaners and soft cloths can be used for cleaning. Keeping the surface of fire rated steel doors clean can prolong their service life and maintain a good appearance.
Lubrication of moving parts
Regularly lubricate the moving parts of fire rated steel doors, including door locks, door hinges, etc., using specialized lubricating oil or grease to ensure smooth opening and closing of the doors and to prevent sticking or jamming caused by rusting of components.
Inspection of fasteners
Regularly inspect the fasteners of fire rated steel doors, including screws, nuts, etc., to ensure they are securely fastened, preventing loosening or detachment. If loose fasteners are found, tighten them promptly to ensure the structural stability and safety of the door.
Regular maintenance of automatic door closer
For fire rated steel doors equipped with automatic door closers, regularly inspect and maintain their automatic closing devices to ensure their sensitivity and reliability, ensuring that fire rated steel doors can close promptly in the event of a fire to prevent the spread of fire.
